Exercise Improves Cognition And Memory Across All Populations

July 31, 2025

The positive impact of exercise on our mental health diseases and outcomes continues to be discovered. Research has moved  from correlational studies showing active individuals have improved health outcomes to cause and effect trials.  These randomized controlled trials have documented the impact of exercise on both healthy individuals and those with mental health diagnoses (Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, anxiety).  A recent review of the available literature was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Singh and colleagues published their findings on the effectiveness of exercise on mental health outcomes (Br J Sports Med. 2025).  Authors included 133 systematic reviews on close to 260,000 participants.  They reported strong evidence supporting exercise’s impact on memory, cognition, and executive function across all ages and populations.

All individuals are encouraged to work with their healthcare provider on reaching the national guidelines for exercise each week.
