In our previous blog we discussed the best body weight exercises for the gluteus maximus. In this blog we will detail the evidence on the best strength training exercises utilizing weights for this muscle group. Neto and colleagues in Journal of Sports Science and Medicine reviewed the available evidence on weighted exercises commonly prescribed in Physical Therapy clinics (2020). Authors included 16 studies in their systematic review of the available evidence. They reported very high levels of gluteus maximus recruitment were found with the step up, hex bar deadlift, barbell hip thrust, split squat, lunge, and barbell deadlift. The results of this data are detailed below.
