The Straw That Broke The Camels Back: How Much Is Too Much With Running Injuries

September 11, 2025

Running injuries are very common among amateur and professional runners.  Up to 90% of all runners report an injury limiting their training or competition.  In our Boulder Physical Therapy and Lafayette Physical Therapy clinics the vast majority of running injuries are overuse in nature and are often precipitated by muscle imbalances and training errors.  The latter category can be further broken down into doing too much too soon or doing too little for too long.  A recent study examined whether a sudden increase in running volume precipitated a future running injury.

Frandsen and colleagues published the results of their cohort study on running injuries in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (2025).  Authors recruited over 5,000 runners (average age 46 y.o., 22% female) and followed them for 18 months.  They reported 35% of these runners sustained a running related injury during the study period.  Authors reported decreased injury risk with a lower ratio of the runner’s current volume as compared to their prior 3 weeks.  Conversely, a significant increase in injury risk was noted when a runner increased their running volume greater than 10% of the longest run they had completed in the last month.
