Creating A Resilient Lower Back

February 18, 2026

In this video you will see a variety of exercises targeted at the low back that build strength throughout a full range of motion.

In physical therapy, I find that low back pain rehab is consistently and significantly under-dosed. In life, the lumbar spine is exposed to significant compressive, shear, and rotational forces in sport and daily activity. Yet, a large portion of rehab stays in short-lever positions, limited ROM, low external load, and minimal flexion or transverse plane demands.

That mismatch matters!

Adaptation is load-specific, and if we never expose the spine to progressive flexion, extension, rotation or higher intensities, we shouldn’t expect it to tolerate those demands outside the clinic.

Lower level isometrics, such as planks, bridges, and side planks, absolutely have a place in rehab. They’re useful for early symptom modulation, motor control, and reintroducing load. But they are entry points, not end-stage loading strategies.

To create meaningful and lasting tissue adaptation and performance carryover, exercise progressions have to reflect the magnitude, velocity, and range of motion required in the real world.
