it is hard to find someone in a Boulder County gym or outdoor area who is not utilizing music to help fuel their workout. Whether engaged in aerobic exercise or strength training music can provide participants more enjoyment during the activity and also boost performance during the session. Thanks to technology advancements it has become easier and easier to bring music with us during these activities. A recent study examined the performance benefits of music during a bout of exercise.
Vinovrski and colleagues published the results of music’s impact on performance variables during a bout of resistance training (J Strength Conditioning Research. 2025). Authors included 19 participants (10 women) experienced in resistance training. Researchers determined each participant’s one rep max for four exercises: squat, deadlift, bent over row, and bench press. Researchers allowed participants to select their own favorite 5 song playlist and also asked for their least favorite genre of music.
Each participant then completed two workouts: one with their favorite music and one with their least favorite genre. At each workout they performed 3 sets to fatigue of the 4 aforementioned exercises while researchers collected blood lactate, heart rate, respiratory rate, and other performance measures. As expected participants who were able to listen to their favorite music performed more repetitions without increasing exertion or fatigue. They also reported higher levels of enjoyment and motivation.
