Hip osteo arthritis (OA) is a common condition with authors reporting up to a 20% prevalence among adults in the U.S. Hip OA remains the most common cause of hip pain in middle to older aged adults often felt in the front of the hip or groin. This condition often leads to pain and loss of standing and walking tolerance. Higher functioning patients often see impacts in the recreational activities, such as hiking and skiing, that they enjoy. An update to the clinical practice guidelines was published to help guide treatment decisions for patients with hip OA.
Cibulka and colleagues published an update to their Clinical Practice Guidelines for hip osteoarthritis in the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy (2025). Authors reported grade A evidence to support the utilization of the following interventions:
- Manual therapy including mobilization, manipulation, and soft tissue mobilizations.
- Exercise including mobility and strength training exercises.
