Availability Is The Best Ability

June 25, 2026

Most patients presenting to our Boulder and Lafayette Physical Therapy practices are facing a pain or symptoms which are limiting their ability to participate in the activities they enjoy.  Their current abilities, or lack thereof, prevent them from being available for work, life, and recreational activities.  Availability is often the greatest predictor of long-term health because you cannot benefit from exercise, recreation, work, or sport if you are sidelined by injury. Injury prevention strategies focused on strength, balance, movement quality, and appropriate training progression can significantly reduce injury risk and help people remain consistently active and available.

Being active over months and years is more important than any single workout or training session.  The best workout program is always the one you can complete consistently over time even in your busiest weeks.  Common injuries often occur when activity levels increase too quickly or when underlying weaknesses and movement limitations are ignored.  The classic too much too soon or too little for too long. By building strength, improving balance, and managing training loads appropriately, people can reduce the likelihood of injury-related interruptions. Consistent participation in exercise, sports, hiking, and daily movement creates the foundation for better fitness, improved performance, and greater independence throughout the lifespan.  Closing the gap between their health span and lifespan.

Availability also plays a critical role in long-term health. Regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, while also supporting mental health and cognitive function. The ability to stay active year after year depends on maintaining a healthy, resilient body that can tolerate physical demands without frequent injury. When injury and disease prevention become a priority, individuals are better positioned to remain active, improve their quality of life, and reduce their overall disease risk as they age.
